January 27, 2009 - Big Bend

Today we had another busy day in Big Bend National Park. We now have a routine. We get up at 5:45 am and go to breakfast. By 8 we are in the vans and on our way to our first hike. Our guides and Sandy and David of Far Flung outdoor adventures.

Today our first walk was to a spring near Mule Ears.

We had lunch at a group picnic site in the National Park - near the Rio Grande. Then we drove to a canyon in the Rio Grande to get a better look at the river.

Then we took another short hike to Indian Head mountain to see ancient pictographs.

After quick showers, we were off in the vans to dinner at a nice restaurant up in the Terlingua Ghost Town - remains  of an old mercury mine and smelting operation. There are many old adobe houses in the ghost town - some now lived in and some in ruins.

The weather here is very variable - from 0 degrees to 35 degrees Centigrade in one day. It was mild this morning and the sky was mostly overcast. By afternoon the sun was blazing down. This evening it got pretty cold - especially since we (foolishly)  weren't expecting it and had not taken jackets to dinner. For a while there was a strong wind and lots of dust. Not too far to the north there was a big ice and snow storm yesterday.

Who knows what it will be like tomorrow!
